Flooring - Unfinished Wood
Unfinished Wood
Unfinished flooring refers to flooring that requires sanding and finishing on site after installation is complete.
This type of solid hardwood flooring is typically 3/4" in thickness, tongue and grooved with end-matching, and available widths range from 2-1/4" to 5" wide. Plank flooring wider than 5" is available, but ordinarily on a special order basis.
Unfinished flooring is usually a square-edged product with some exceptions. Board lengths on manufactured flooring will range from 12" up to 78" on a random length basis. Long length flooring is available on a special order basis. Please refer to Custom Run Flooring.
Red Oak or White Oak
There are a few differences between red oak and white oak. Predominantly in the color undertones of the wood. Red has warm reddish undertones, while white oak has golden undertones. White oak is also a little harder than red oak but in a residential setting this will make little difference. If you stain your floor you can expect a more pronounced grain pattern from red oak than from white oak.
Select or better
Expect gentle color variations usually more pronouced in white oak. You will find a few mineral streaks here and there accenting the floor like nature eyeliner. One of the most unique aspects of your floor will be the interesting and varying grain pattern. You will also find small burls and similar character interspersed occasionally on the grain.
Number 1 common
A number one common floor has interesting and inviting character . Expect some deep, rich color variations both from heartwood and sapwood, and naturally stained grain. Your floor will be punctuated with exciting mineral streaks, perfect small knots (more predominant in white oak) and beautiful worm holes more predominant in red oak.
Number 2 common
Expect a broad expectrum of deep, rich color variations both from heartwood and sapwood and from naturally stained grain. Your floor will be punctuated with exciting mineral streaks, larger knots, and even more beautiful wormholes than in the number one common.
